The SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) covers the period 400-1600 (stopping just short of the period for this course, unfortunately) but would be able to answer your questions. There is a very active embroidery group on Facebook which is a mixture of 'mundane' (normal) and SCA members. The most active historical embroidery group on the Net at the moment. https://www.facebook.com/groups/HistoricHandEmbroidery/ I've suggested to many historically-bent embroiderers here that they join this group as a support. If you are not on Facebook, but have issues joining, I can suggest a work-around. They will be able to provide you with further information re "J"s and bookmarks - that sort of stuff is right up their alley, as they have to provide tight documentation for their competition works.
PS Don't worry about providing short links - the Ning truncates them, as you may have seen now. We all just use the 'link infinity symbol' provided in these post boxes.

Hi Jeannette I believe I'm sending a small to you in the small exchange. I was wanting to get your postal address.
Thanks Leigh Aldrich
